FAQ
Questions families ask
Famile is the private home for your family's memories, where everyone you love shares photos, videos and voice notes in one place. The free plan holds 1 GB for the whole family, and paid plans start at $1.99 a month. Grandparents can look through it from any browser with a code sent to their phone. Here are the questions families ask us most.
Set up your familyGetting started
What is Famile?
Famile is the private home for your family's memories: an app where your family shares its photos, videos and voice notes and keeps them with the people and moments they belong to, so everyone can relive them together. Only the people your family adds can see inside. It works in any web browser today, and the iOS and Android apps are coming soon.
Who can join our family?
Only the relatives your family adds. Once someone adds your phone number to your profile, you sign in with that number and a one-time code we send to it. They can also send you your own sign-in link: open it, confirm with the code, and you're in. Nothing in your family is ever public, and the link is no use to anyone without your phone.
Do grandparents need to install an app?
No. A grandparent can be part of the family without an account at all: they have a profile, they're tagged in the photos they're in, and their voice notes stay beside the photos. When they want to look for themselves, they sign in on the website with a code sent to their phone, in any browser.
Is there an app?
Famile works in any web browser today, on your phone or your computer, with nothing to install. The iPhone and Android apps are coming soon.
Which languages does Famile speak?
English and Arabic, with the whole app right to left in Arabic. More languages are on the way.
Privacy
Who can see what we share?
Only your family, because what's shared in the family stays in the family. Inside it, a private circle keeps a post to the few people in it, and a private note on someone's wall stays between the two of you.
Do you use our photos to train AI?
Never. Your memories stay yours, and nothing a family shares is used to train any AI model, ours or anyone else's. That's our promise, and it's written into our privacy policy.
Do you recognise faces?
Never on our servers. If you'd like to group photos by face, your own phone or computer does it, and the face data never leaves it.
Are there ads?
No, on every plan, Free included. Famile is paid for by families, and we never sell your data or share it with advertisers.
Is our data encrypted?
Yes. Your memories are encrypted on their way to us and where they're stored, and phone numbers, emails and birthdays are encrypted again in our database.
Where is our data kept?
In the European Union: the app and its database run in Ireland, and photos, videos and voice notes are stored in the Netherlands.
Children and family
Can a baby have a profile?
Yes, from the day they're born. Every photo, video and voice note the family adds gathers on their profile, and when they're old enough it becomes theirs, with their whole childhood waiting inside.
Can teenagers have their own account?
From 13. Until 15, a parent or guardian has to agree when they add them, and nobody under 16 can start or run a family. A younger child is in Famile only as a profile the family looks after.
Plans and payment
What does the free plan include?
1 GB of storage, about 340 photos, shared by the whole family, with as many members as you like and the same privacy as every plan. Private circles come with Starter and above.
How much do the paid plans hold?
Starter holds 25 GB, Family 100 GB and Family Plus 200 GB, each shared by the whole family. If you need more than 200 GB, write to us.
Which currency will we pay in?
Egyptian pounds in Egypt, or with an Egyptian phone number; US dollars everywhere else.
Is there a limit on video length?
No. Videos keep 1080p quality on every plan with no length limit; a single file can be up to 5 GB.
What happens when we reach the limit?
New uploads pause until there's room, and every memory you've already shared stays exactly where it is. Nothing is ever deleted to make space.
Can one person pay for the whole family?
Yes. The plan belongs to the whole family, so anyone in it can pay, from anywhere in the world. It's a lovely way to look after everyone back home when you live far away.
Can we change plans later?
Any time. Moving up is instant: you pay only the difference for the time left, and the extra room is yours straight away. Moving down starts with your next payment.
What happens if we stop paying?
Nothing is deleted. Your family moves to the free plan, and every photo, video and voice note stays where it is, for everyone to see. If your memories take up more room than the free plan has, new uploads pause until you choose a plan again.
Is there a limit on family members?
None at all. Bring in every aunt, uncle and cousin, on every plan, the free one too.
Your memories and your account
Can I download everything?
Yes. From Settings you can download everything you added, as a ZIP: your photos, videos and voice notes in their original files, and what you wrote.
How do I delete my account?
From Settings, or without the app at famile.org/delete-account. Deletion happens 30 days later, so you can change your mind until then.
Can we bring in the photos we already have?
Yes. Save them from your group chat or shared album to your phone or computer, then add them to Famile from the Library, many at once. Each one lands on the day it was taken, as long as the file still carries that date.
Who makes Famile?
Validera, a software company. Famile began after years of watching a family's memories disappear in a group chat, and the whole story is on our About page. Famile is paid for by the families who use it.
